Lawless (2012). An impressive movie, set in prohibition era America. It works as a rural companion piece to HBO's brilliant Boardwalk Empire. Shia LaBeouf puts in his best performance since he started playing with robots; and Tom Hardy is sublime.
Great Expectations (TV). Better than the recent, slightly bland, big screen outing - This three part BBC television adaptation of the classic Dickins tale, stars Burbury model, Douglas Booth as Pip. A brilliant Gillian Anderson is Miss Havisham and Ray Winstone is Magwitch. Booth will next be seen as Romeo in a new version of Romeo & Juliet. At cinemas soon.
Captain America - the first Avenger (2011) Another of the Avengers Assemble, "build up" movies, hits the service. Chris Evans is the Captain. A second Captain America movie comes to the big screen, next year.
HBO and Netflix are real rivals, indeed in the USA, Netflix now has more subscribers than HBO. Sadly, because of this rivalry, it's unlikely that much HBO content will end up on Netflix. However, because the epic Rome was a BBC co-production, all twenty episodes are available on the service.
High Fidelity (2000). John Cusack recounts his top 5 break-ups in this great record store comedy, based on the book by Nick Hornby. Also stars Jack Black.
Almost Famous (2000). One of the first classics of this millennium. A boy travels on tour with a new rock band, as he tries to write an article for Rolling Stone magazine. It resurrected Elton John's early song, Tiny Dancer.
