Twenty of the best movies released in the UK in 2013

The Impossibe. A stunning re-creation of one families plight in the 2004 tsunami.

Star Trek into Darkness. JJ Abraham's delivers a non stop stunning thrill ride of a movie; and a real hope that his Star Wars sequels will actually be good.  Benedict Cumberbatch (Sherlock) joins the cast.

Les Miserables. The stunning world-wide smash hit musical transfers to the big screen, and if anything betters the stage show.

The Hunger Games: Catching Fire.  An excellent second outing for the killer teen franchise.

Despicable me 2.  Better than the original and a lot better than monsters university.

Wreck it Ralph.  An excellent mash up of video game nostalgia and decent storytelling from Disney.

Frozen.  The best animated feature from Disney since The Lion King.

Saving Mr Banks.  Emma Thompson & Tom Hanks are on stunning form in this beautifully made story of how Mary Poppins was made.  It also adds a new sense of wonder, when watching the original movie.

Captain Phillips.  Paul Greengrass presents a gripping true thriller about modern day piracy, with Tom Hanks as the captain.

Behind the Candelabra.  A hugely fun, yet somewhat disturbing biopic.

Rush.  If real life F1 was fairly dull in 2013, the thrill of watching this movie, more than made up for it.

Django Unchained.  A stunning movie, from a director and cast on stunning form.  Possibly Quentin Tarantino's best since Pulp Fiction.

Mud.  Part of the Mathew McConaughey 'McCona-sance', of excellent movies - this coming of age tale has definite echoes of Stand by me.

The Paperboy. That man Mathew McConaughey again - alongside the excellent Zac Efron.

Thor: The dark world.  Better than the original, Marvel (who also released Iron Man 3) shows once again that superhero movies should be fun!

Enders Game.  An interesting and dark kids movie, that sadly failed to find an audience in theatres.

Before Midnight. A beautiful third movie in the walking/talking series.

The Kings of Summer.  One of the best movies of the year and shamefully only shown in two UK cinemas.  Now on Lovefilm instant, iTunes and DVD;  this modern tale of three teens running away and living in the woods, really deserves to find an audience.

The way way back.  A brilliant summer vacation comedy drama - with The Killing's (US) Liam James as the awkward teen, who takes refuge in a water park to avoid his Mother's nasty boyfriend - Steve Carrell playing wonderfully against type.

Gravity.  The awesome movie that finally justifies the use of 3D.
